Bloomington, Indiana is the seventh largest city in the state of Indiana located 50 miles south of Indianapolis and is known as the Gateway to Scenic Southern Indiana. The city was founded in 1818 by southern settlers who were astounded by the city’s foliage and abundance of blooming flowers, which is how the city of Bloomington received its name.


Bloomington’s overall population as of 2016 is 84,067 and the predominant majority of the city is students at Indiana University Bloomington, which boasts an incredible student body of over 42,000 students and nearly 9,000 employees.

Bloomington has become one of the most culturally diverse cities in Indiana, and this is mainly due to Indiana University bringing students from all over the United States and abroad. Given that Bloomington is a very large college town with much to offer, there are plenty of options for entertainment other than Indiana University.

One of the main tourist attractions in Bloomington is the Oliver Winery that brings people from all over the state to learn about wine manufacturing and of course taste some of the best wine that is made in Indiana.

WonderLab is a great science museum for parents to take their kids to that allows for incredible childhood memories, as well as fun and education for the whole family.

Just outside of Bloomington is Monroe Lake that offers picturesque sunsets every evening and great water temperatures in the summer months. It’s here that many people will either rent or take out their own boats and enjoy life on the water in Indiana. The Fairfax State Recreation Area is also at Monroe Lake and is one of the most popular parks in Bloomington.

Just like so many other Indiana towns, the Bloomington Community Farmers Market offers some of the best fruits and vegetables straight from the farmers themselves, and it’s a great option for everyone as it is a popular street market to enjoy every weekend.

The Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University is one of the best museums in the entire state providing student art throughout the history of the school and also provides access to some of Indiana’s best collections.

Of course, as you can imagine football games are a huge deal in Bloomington, and although Indiana University isn’t necessarily a powerhouse football program in the Big Ten Conference, it still boasts a very reputable program and sells out every game. Memorial Stadium is where the team plays and it is a staple in Bloomington’s athletic culture.

When it comes to arts and entertainment in Bloomington, nothing is bigger than the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, which is located in the heart of downtown and showcases a variety of local and nationally known artists and performers on a daily basis. It’s here where you can see music, dance, theater and movies all under one roof.

Food and Leisure

When it comes to great restaurants, Bloomington is known for providing an entire variety of great options for any palette. Some of the very best restaurants in the city include Janko’s Little Zagreb, Scholar’s Inn Gourmet Café and Wine Bar, Truffles Restaurant and Fifty-Six Degrees Bar and Topos 403. For those looking for some less expensive options there is Darn Good Soup, the Bloomington Sandwich Company, the Cloverleaf Family Restaurant and Laughing Planet Café amongst hundreds of others.

Bloomington is a college town and like every college town there is a thriving nightlife. Some of the best bars and nightclubs in Bloomington include The Atlas Bar, Cardinal Spirits, Video Saloon, Nick’s English Hut, The Alley, The Root Cellar, C3 Bar, The Bishop, Oddball Fermentables and Kilroy’s Sports Bar.


The Monroe County Courthouse is located on West Kirkwood Avenue in the heart of downtown and is the major focal point for the Bloomington local government and police force. City Hall is located at 401 North Morton Street and it is one of the historic, Beaux-Arts style buildings in the city that was built in 1915.
