About South Bend

South Bend, Indiana is known worldwide for being the home of the University of Notre Dame and as one of the biggest football towns in America. It is the fourth largest city in Indiana and has become one of the most cultural and economically thriving cities in the entire state in recent years.

Long before Notre Dame’s football program brought notoriety to South Bend, it was a city settled by fur traders in the early 1800s. Because of the nearby St. Joseph River, the economy began to grow, and by 1960 the city reached its highest population of just over 132,000 people.

The major industries in recent years include tourism, education, health care and small businesses.

South Bend is a very young city, partly due to all of the nearby universities, with an average age of 33 years. A majority of the households are families with or without children, but non-family taxpayers own about 40% of all households in South Bend.

South Bend is famous for being the home of many different higher learning institutions including the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, Holy Cross College and Indiana University South Bend.

The South Bend Community School system operates 18 elementary, 10 middle and six high schools. There are also several private schools in the area including the Veritas Academy, which was Indiana’s first charter school.

South Bend has been one of the more culturally relevant cities in Indiana for quite a long time, and today it remains one of the most fun cities in the entire state by providing entertainment for the whole family and a large variety of options.

Obviously, everyone thinks of South Bend as ‘Football Heaven’ where sports rule, and it is true that going to a Notre Dame sporting event is one of the many fun things to do in the city. There are plenty of options outside of sports too, like music festivals.

Music festivals are always occurring throughout the summer months in South Bend, including the South Bend International Festival, formerly known as the South Bend Reggae Festival, which provides performances from all different cultures and musical genres. Also every year in September, there is the All Day Country Concert that provides over 37,000 free tickets and is always a great time for the whole family.

Sounds by South Bend is a relatively new festival in the city that just started in 2013 and provides an extremely eclectic variety of entertainment and musical talent.

All of these festivals remain a cornerstone of the South Bend local economy for local businesses by helping drive tourists to the city.

Things to Do

South Bend is known for some of its iconic landmarks and popular places, and arguably the most beautiful building that is a must-see in the city is the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It’s here that you will see some of the best architecture in the entire Midwest, and this pristine architecture also applies to the entire Norte Dame campus as well.

The Studebaker National Museum is one of the most popular museums in South Bend that blends modern and contemporary art seamlessly in a fun, entertaining way that differentiates itself from the typical museum.

The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is one of the most spectacular sights in South Bend and remains one of the most popular religious sites in all of Indiana.

Of course, as always, the Notre Dame football stadium is a bucket list sporting venue for all football fans, and if you do get the chance to check out a game it is a once-in-a-lifetime sports experience. When it comes to college football it doesn’t get any bigger than South Bend.

The Potawatomi Zoo is a great place for the whole family to enjoy a nice afternoon in the sun, and it is home to a very large variety of primates and indigenous African and Asian species of all kinds!

Food and Leisure

South Bend is well known for its great food, and no matter what you’re craving or your price range there is a great restaurant just waiting for you and your company.

One of the best fine dining restaurants in the entire city is the LaSalle Grill, which offers one of the best menus in the entire region. The Tippecanoe Place Restaurant is another very interesting place to go get a meal because it not only has great food, but it is located inside a very large, stone mansion that dates back to the early 20th century!

On the other side of the price spectrum there are restaurants like the Chicory Café, the Mango Café, Legends of Notre Dame and Macri’s Italian Bakery that have become staples in the local dining community.

Of course being a college town there are also a lot of really fun bars to go to in South Bend. The five best bars in the city include the Cheers Pub, Corby’s Irish Pub, Club Fever, the Linebacker Lounge and The Blarney Stone.

Historically South Bend has been a very liberal city, and the city council has reflected those liberal ideologies through countless resolutions and ordinances throughout the years.

The St. Joseph County Courthouse is located at 101 S Main Street and remains the prominent government office for the local area and handles thousands of lawsuits and court appearances per month.

City Hall is located at 1045 W Sample Street and is a focal point for the local South Bend government and police force.

So when it comes down to it South Bend really is one of the most unique cities in all of Indiana and remains to this day an extremely popular tourist attraction and place of permanent residence.
